Articles and interviews by other cyclists, travelers and reporters on the road. As soon as you, as a cyclist, enter countries like Iran and UAE it may happen you will be interviewed for local newspapers and you might even appear on television. This was never my favourite past-time occupation but the interviewers or people who brought me into contact with the journalists, were very fond of a rarity such as a female on a bicycle.
Focus on Education, a local Dutch organization, run by Marijke and Jacques, got me much publicity in order to collect financial support for their fantastic organization. Through them a video was being made just before the start of my cycling trip: by Pasta Media Productions.

Opnieuw een bericht in een lokaal huis-aan-huis blad ‘t Carillon’, Terheijden
Mijn wereldfietstocht die begon in mei 2012 is nog niet afgelopen. Ik heb er nu bijna 25.000 kilometer opzitten. Vanuit Nederland via België, Frankrijk en Spanje fietste ik naar Afrika. Na Marokko begon mijn zware fietstocht door de Saharawoestijn. Ik fietste door landen als Mauritanië en de Westelijke Sahara om vervolgens via Senegal in Gambia aan te komen, waar ik het eerste project bezocht van Focus on Education. Hier bezocht ik de medicinale kruidentuin met instructieruimte voor vrouwen. Hier krijgt de lokale bevolking les in de toepassing van deze geneeskrachtige kruiden door de Gambiaanse projectpartner van de stichting; Sulayman Bah.
Hierna heb ik mijn fietstocht vervolgd door de West Afrikaanse landen: Guinee Bissau, Sierra Leone, Guinee, Liberia, Ivoorkust, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria en Kameroen. Het lag in de bedoeling om door te reizen naar Congo om daar de schoolprojecten van Focus on Education te bezoeken, maar technische problemen aan mijn speciale fiets konden niet verholpen worden, waardoor ik terug moest naar Europa. Ik heb hierna mijn fietstocht vervolgd door Turkije, Georgië, Armenië, Irak, Iran, de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten en Oman. En vanuit Oman per vliegtuig naar India. Vanuit het uiterste zuiden van India ben ik na 3500 kilometer fietsen door dit gigantische land in de hoofdstad Delhi aangekomen. Om hier vanuit het zuiden te komen was geen makkelijke opgave. In de zomer stijgen hier de temperaturen tot boven de 50 graden en het is een enorme drukte op de weg. Hier zijn geen stille, eenzame weggetjes. India is luid, druk en vol, maar ook grappig. Vaak moet ik al fietsend erg lachen op om de bizarre beelden die zich voor mijn ogen afspeelden. Al fietsende beweeg ik me niet alleen tussen de lokale bevolking maar bezoek ik ook de educatieve projecten die Focus on Education heeft opgezet in Afrika en Azië. In Noord India ga ik een aantal scholen in de Indiase Himalaya bezoeken om te controleren of de kinderen van de kansarme bevolking in de bergen hier goed onderwijs aangeboden krijgen. Focus on Education financierde er 6 basisscholen. Ik steun met mijn wereldfietstocht en projectbezoeken Focus on Education en ik hoop dat jullie hen ook een beetje willen helpen bij het financieren van hun schoolprojecten.

July 2014. My world bike trip that began in May 2012 is not over yet. I have cycled nearly 25,000 kilometers by now. From the Netherlands via Belgium, France and Spain, I cycled to Africa. After Morocco an adventurous bike ride started through the Sahara Desert. I cycled through countries like Mauritania and Western Sahara to go through Senegal, and Gambia where I visited the first project of Focus on Education. Here I visited the medicinal herb garden with instruction space for women. Here the locals get lessons in the application of these medicinal herbs done by the Gambian project partner of the foundation; Sulayman Bah.
After that I rode my bike through West African countries: Guinea Bissau, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria and Cameroon. It was the intention to travel to Congo to visit another one of the school projects Focus on Education has set up here, but technical problems with my bicycle could not be resolved, so I had to return to Europe. I rode on, from Turkey, Georgia, Armenia, Iraq, Iran, the United Arab Emirates and Oman. And I flew by plane from Oman to India. From the Southern tip of India, I arrived after 3500 kilometers of constant cycling through this gigantic land in the capital Delhi. To get there from the south was not an easy task. In summer the temperatures rise here above 50 degrees and it’s a huge circus on the road. There are no silent moments, no lonely roads. India is loud, busy and crowded, but also funny. Often I was cycling and laughing at the bizarre images that took place in front of my eyes.
As a cyclists I move not only among the locals but I also visit the educational projects that focus on Education has set up in Africa and Asia. In North India, I’m going to visit a number of schools in the Indian Himalayas to check whether the children of the disadvantaged population in the mountains are offered good education. Focus on Education has funded six primary schools.
I support Focus on Education by cycling to their schools and projects, and I hope you will help fund their school projects too. BREDA – Na veel gereisd te hebben per openbaar vervoer ontdekte Cindy de fiets. Zij fietste inmiddels heel Afrika door en is nu in Iran, een ‘tussenstop’ op haar fietstocht naar India. Zij probeert op deze manier geld in te zamelen voor de stichting Focus on Education en werd genomineerd voor de Bredase Vredesprijs 2013.

Een interview per mail dus deze keer, want na een korte periode in Nederland is Cindy alweer een tijdje op weg. “Ik ben een echte reiziger, vanaf de eerste dag op de fiets is dit het ultieme vervoersmiddel voor mij. Langzaam genoeg om me helemaal onder te dompelen in elke cultuur, om me één te voelen met het land waardoorheen ik me beweeg en snel genoeg om er doorheen te komen met de gekregen tijd die een visum toelaat. Ik fiets alleen, maar kom onderweg regelmatig andere fietsers tegen met wie ik soms een tijdje samen reis. Mensen denken snel dat het heel gevaarlijk is om als vrouw alleen zo’n reis te maken, maar door de bevolking open en onbevooroordeeld te benaderen zullen ze mij vaak net zo behandelen. Vrede begint óók bij jezelf!“

“Ik kom binnen in werelden waar niet iedereen het zo goed heeft zoals de meesten van ons die dit lezen. Wat Focus on Education doet laat me inzien dat iets doen voor een ander voldoening geeft voor jezelf.
‘Een druppel is het begin van een oceaan’
Door – al is het maar een beetje – een ander te kunnen helpen, door een hele kleine schakel te mogen en kunnen zijn, kun je toch heel veel betekenen. Juist door die kleine schakel te zijn in een groot geheel, bouw je aan een meer in balans zijnde wereld, en daardoor aan een algehele vrede. Natuurlijk is dit begrip vrede heel moeilijk te bewerkstelligen, vooral wanneer je reist door landen waar veel armoede is, maar ik geloof er in dat wanneer iedereen eerlijk is voor zichzelf, men dat ook doorgeeft aan een ander.”

“Ik ben nu aan de Perzische Golf in Iran en wacht op een ferry die me naar Dubai gaat brengen. Na Afrika, met een onverwachte tussenstop in Nederland, ben ik verder gefietst naar Koerdistan in Irak, weer eens 2200 kilometer verder door bergen en woestijn, om te komen waar ik nu ben. Vanuit Oman neem ik een vlucht naar India. Liever fiets ik, maar omdat ik niet makkelijk aan een Pakistaans visum kon komen, besluit ik één van mijn favoriete landen over te slaan om verder te fietsen door India. Hier ga ik opnieuw een aantal projecten bezoeken voor Focus on Education.”

In this way I am trying to raise funds for the organization Focus on Education, a foundation that was nominated for the Peace Prize of Breda in 2013.

An interview by e-mail this time, because after a brief period in the Netherlands Cindy has been a while on the road again. “I’m a real traveler, from the first day on the bicycle this is the ultimate transport for me. Slow enough to immerse myself completely in every culture and fast enough to get through by the given time on the visa permits. I cycle alone, but sometimes I meet other cyclist on the road and we travel together for a while. People think quickly that it is very dangerous as a woman to make such a trip, but my unbiased approach to people result often a similar reaction. Peace begins by yourself! “

“I come to places where not everyone has it as good as most of us who read this article. What Focus on Education does let me realize that doing something for others gives a satisfaction to yourself.
‘One drop is the onset of an ocean ‘
By – if only a little – helping another and being a very small link you may still mean a lot, precisely because of being this small link in a greater whole. With many small links you build a more balanced world, hence working towards an encompassing peace. Of course, this notion of peace is very difficult to achieve, especially when traveling through countries where poverty is, but I belief that if everyone is honest for itself, they will also pass this to others.”

“I am now on the Persian Gulf in Iran waiting for a ferry that’s going to bring me to Dubai. After Africa, with an unexpected stopover in the Netherlands, I continued cycling to Kurdistan in Iraq, again 2200 kilometers by mountains and desert, to get to where I am now. From Oman I take a flight to India. Rather I go by bicycle, but because I do not easily get a Pakistani visa, I decide a skip one of my favorite countries, and cycle on through India. Here I go visit again a number of projects for Focus on Education.”

Dutch cyclist passes through the UAE this week on a global bike quest
A cyclist from the Netherlands has landed in Dubai while on her mission to cycle around the globe to raise money for children’s education in third-world countries.
Cindy, 41, has been cycling solo since May 2012, and has raised an estimated $12,500.
After originally working in the art world, Cindy said: ‘I wanted to do more to give back to society. Once I started cycling, I didn’t want to stop.’ She took over as the project assistant of a small charity group in Africa and Asia called Focus on Education before kicking off her journey. Servranckx has already cycled across Africa and Europe before landing in Asia. But the journey hasn’t been easy, and Cindy has to make sacrifices. ‘I do a lot of bush camping because I can’t afford to stay in expensive hotels,’ she said. She added that she camped in the bushes of Africa, slept on beaches, and stayed in forests, churches, mosques and schools. She also uses backpacking website couchsurfing.org to find friendly families who allow travellers to stay for a few days.
‘I do this not just for the children, but also because I want to meet different people and learn many cultures,’ she said. She added that the people she has met during her journey have been very hospitable and welcoming, which motivates her. Yet the ultimate success of her trip is reliant on her bike. ‘If my bicycle ever breaks down, I have to get a flight to Paris and cycle back to the Netherlands,’ Cindy said.
To maintain good health while travelling, she said she tries to eat healthy. ‘Luckily, I usually never get sick,’ she said. ‘If I get any kind of infections while sleeping in the bushes, I have to cycle until I find a doctor.’ Cindy will be in Dubai for a few more days before heading to Oman and then to India. Cindy genomineerd voor de Bredase Vredesprijs 2013
Cindy, projectmedewerkster van Stichting Focus on Education, was 1 van de 3 kandidaten die onlangs werden genomineerd voor de Bredase Vredesprijs 2013. Dit vanweg haar inspanningen om onderwijsprojecten te promoten in ontwikkelingslanden en hierdoor aan een vreedzame samenleving in landen met conflictgebieden, zoals bijv. Congo. In eerdere publicaties in weekblad ‘t Carillon werd al verslag gedaan van haar bijzondere fietstocht door een groot aantal Afrikaanse landen waarmee zij geld inzamelde voor de onderwijsprojecten van Focus on Education.
Deze prestaties zijn niet onopgemerkt gebleven en hebben ertoe geleid dat zij op 25 september jl. door wethouder Bergkamp van de gemeente Breda in de Nassauzaal van de KMA te Breda een certificaat kreeg uitgereikt. Dit als blijk van waardering voor haar bijdrage aan een vreedzame samenleving, vooral ook in conflictgebieden die zij bezocht heeft. Momenteel fietst zij in Irak en is op weg naar India om ook daar een aantal onderwijsprojecten te bezoeken en vrijwilligerswerk te verrichten, u kunt haar blijven volgen via haar weblog.

Cindy nominated for the Breda Peace Prize 2013
Cindy, project assistant of Foundation Focus on Education, was one of the three candidates who were recently nominated for the Peace Prize of Breda 2013. This because of her efforts to promote education in developing countries and thus to a peaceful society in conflict countries, such as Congo. In previous publications in weekly newspaper ‘t Carillon we already reported on about her special bike ride through many African countries with which she collected money for Focus on Education.
These achievements have not gone unnoticed and have led to issue Cindy a certificate in the Nassau Hall of the KMA in Breda. Chairman of Breda, Mister Bergkamp hands out this certificate on September 25th as a token of appreciation for her contribution to a peaceful society, especially in conflict areas that she has visited. Currently she’s cycling in Iraq and is on her way to India where she will visit a number of educational projects and work as a volunteer, you can follow her on her weblog.

Pushing for charity delivers 3,000 euros for Focus on Education
In May we asked everyone to vote on a solar energy project for a medical training school for ex-child soldiers in the former war zone in Congo. Our project was one of the nominees of the national campaign ‘Cycling Scores’. The Terheijdense Cindy decide to cycle for this cause and other projects of Focus on Education, on a three year cycle trip through Africa and Asia. After one year of cycling she arrived in Cameroon in the heart of Africa. We asked you to support her cause by voting. Many votes could yield her an amount of € 3,000 for the purpose for which she ride. To gain this amount it was necessary to finish in the first five. That she did!
Focus on education has become 1 of the 5 winners at the ‘Cycling Scores’ competition, making the € 3,000 which will be used for the installation of solar panels on the school. This amount is supplemented by ‘Wilde Ganzen’ at a bonus of 55%. Therefore, we want to sincerely thank everyone who has voted for this project. And of course, our thanks also goes to Cindy who has made 15.000 km in one year cycling, often under very difficult circumstances. A great achievement! Also thanks to all the volunteers of Focus on Education along with Cindy who’ll worked hard to recruit votes.
Due to a technical defect on her bike, something that could not be repaired in Africa, Cindy was forced to interrupt her journey. Meanwhile the bike is repaired after a short visit to the Netherlands. The last part of her cycling tour to Congo isn’t possible because of the rainy season and the roads are no longer passable by tropical downpours.
Therefore, she has continued her bicycle tour from Georgia to India where she again will visit school projects for Focus on Education. But before she reach there she will have to push long distances for charity. We will keep you informed. Trappen voor het goede doel levert 3000 euro op voor Focus on Education.
In mei vroegen we iedereen te stemmen op een zonne-energieproject voor een medische opleidingsschool voor ex-kindsoldaten in het voormalig oorlogsgebied in Congo. Dit was één van de genomineerde projecten van de landelijke actie ‘Fietsen Scoort’. De Terheijdense Cindy maakt voor dit en andere doelen van Focus on Education een 3 jaar durende fietstocht door Afrika en Azië. Na 1 jaar fietsen was ze aangekomen in Kameroen in het hart van Afrika. We verzochten u haar intiatief te steunen met uw stem. Veel stemmen kon haar een bedrag van €3000 opleveren voor het doel waarvoor ze fietst. Daarvoor was het nodig bij de eerste 5 te eindigen. Dat is gelukt!
Focus on education is met Cindy’s fietstocht 1 van de 5 winnaars geworden bij de actie ‘Fietsen Scoort’, waardoor de €3000 kan worden besteedt aan de installatie van zonnepanelen op de school. Bovendien wordt dit bedrag door Wilde Ganzen aangevuld met een premie van 55%. Daarom willen wij iedereen die op ons project heeft gestemd hiervoor hartelijk bedanken. En natuurlijk gaat onze dank ook uit naar Cindy die in 1 jaar tijd van ruim 15.000 km heeft gemaakt onder vaak erg zware omstandigheden. Een geweldige prestatie! Ook dank aan alle vrijwilligers van Focus on Education sie samen met Cinderella hard gewerkt hebben om stemmen te werven.
Door een technisch mankement aan haar fiets, dat niet in Afrika hersteld kon worden, was Cindy genoodzaakt om haar fietstocht te onderbreken. Inmiddels is de fiets na een kort bezoek aan Nederland weer hersteld. Het laatste stuk van haar fietstocht naar Congo heeft ze niet meer kunnen uitvoeren omdat het regenseizoen is aangebroken en de wegen door tropische regenbuien niet meer berijdbaar zijn.
Daarom heeft ze haar fiesttocht voortgezet vanuit Georgië richting India waar ze ook weer een aantal schoolprojecten van Focus on Education zal bezoeken. Maar voordat ze daar aankomt zal ze nog heel veel kilometers moeten trappen voor het goede doel. Wij houden u op de hoogte. Announcement for all residents of the municipality Drimmelen
I would like to ask all of you to vote for the solar project I have made my cause to cycling for. I left on Sunday, May 20th, 2012 and in 3 years I’ll visit all the school projects of Foundation Focus on Education in Africa and Asia by bicycle. I go there to check their projects and to do voluntary work. I’m now cycling through Nigeria, am almost in the heart of Africa. It is very hard cycling, but fantastic to do.
Through this cycle tour I am trying to raise money for the purchase of solar panels for a school for ex-child soldiers and (orphaned) children in Congo. This project is called ‘Pushing for charity’ and if I gain many votes, I get 3000 euros for this project, to be made available from the national campaign ‘Cycling Scores’.

Oproep aan alle bewoners van de gemeente Drimmelen
Graag wil ik u allemaal vragen om te stemmen op het zonne-energieproject waarvoor ik ‘een goede doelen fietstocht’ houd. Ik ben op zondag 20 mei 2012 vertrokken en wil in 3 jaar tijd langs alle schoolprojecten van stichting Focus on Education in Afrika en Azië fietsen. Ik ga daar hun projecten controleren en er vrijwilligerswerk doen. Ik fiets nu door Nigeria, ben bijna in het hart van Afrika. Het is heelzwaar, maar geweldig om te doen.
Ik probeer via deze feisttocht geld in te zamelen voor de aanschaf van zonnepanelen voor een school voor ex-kindsoldaten en (wees)kinderen in Congo. Dit project heet ‘Trappen voor het goede doel’ en als ik veel stemmen werf, krijg ik voor dit project 3000 euro dat wordt beschikbaar gesteld vanuit de landelijke actie: ‘Fietsen Scoort’.

Cyclist Cindy 1 year on the road
In May last year, she got on the bike to start cycling for the Millennium Tour in name of Foundation Focus on Education from Terheijden. And now, one year later, after more than 13,000 kilometers she is in West Africa, Nigeria to be precise.
She has now crossed 17 countries and she is planning to have a lot more to traverse on her way to India, where she thinks she might finish the tour in 2015. On her bike Cindy has seen a lot in the past year, with a few adversities here and there. Especially the journey over 1,300 km across the Sahara, the largest desert on earth. During the day the temperature rose above 40 degrees (more accurate: around 50 degrees) and at night it was just a few degrees above 0 (and sometimes still a blazing 35 degrees). She slept in a tent or in a simple shelter where mainly truck drivers spend the night, because tourists are not to be found around here. She has enjoyed despite the hardships of nature in the desert. Especially after a sporadic rain shower when beautiful plants and flowers emerged from the dry desert earth. Beautiful pictures she has made are to be seen on her blog.
After 7300 km cycling she reached Gambia in November, where she has visited a project of Foundation Focus on Education. Several years ago, with financial assistance from the Foundation a botanical garden has set up here, in which native plants and especially indigenous medicinal herbs are grown. Our project partner, the Gambian Sulayman, is a herbal expert and gives lessons to the locals. He teaches them how to use these plants and herbs and how to grow them and also how these herbs can be used medicinally. This is very important because the majority of the local population can not afford a visit to the doctor. After this visit, she continued her bike tour through West Africa, sometimes alone, sometimes in the company of other world cyclists she came across on the road. Cycling on African roads is often cycling on dirt roads and that at a temperature of 30 degrees! And sometimes she must make a detour to avoid unstable area’s. But however the bike tour will continue: it remains an exceptional achievement of this world traveler for charities.

Wereldfietsster Cindy 1 jaar onderweg
In mei vorig jaar stapte ze op de fiets om te beginnen aan haar Millennium wereldfietstocht voor Stichting Focus on Education uit Terheijden. En nu, 1 jaar later, na ruim 13.000 kilometer trappen zit ze in West Afrika, in Nigeria om precies te zijn.
Ze heeft ondertussen 17 landen doorkruist en ze is van plan om er nog heel wat te doorkruisen op weg naar India waar ze haar fietstocht in 2015 denkt te beeindigen. Cindy heeft het afgelopen jaar veel gezien en ook veel afgezine. Vooral de tocht van ruim 1300 km door de Sahara, de grootste woestijn op aarde. Overdag liep de temperatuur op tot boven de 40 graden (zeg maar gerust tegen de 50 graden aan) en ‘s nachts was het slechts enkele graden boven 0 (maar soms ook nog steeds 35 graden). Slapen in een tentje of in een simpel onderkomen waar voornamelijk vrachtwagenchauffeurs de nacht doorbrengen, want toeristen zijn hier niet te vinden. Ze heeft ondanks de ontberingen genoten van de natuur in de woestijn. Vooral na een sporadisch regenbuitje waarna er prachtige planten en bloemen tevoorschijn kwamen uit de droge woestijngrond. Na 7300 km fietsen kwam ze in november aan in Gambia, waar ze een project van Stichting Focus on Education heeft bezocht. Enkele jaren geleden werd met financiële hulp van de stichting een botanische tuin aangelegd waar naast inheemse planten vooral ook inheemse geneeskrachtige kruiden worden verbouwd. De Gambiaanse projectpartner Sulayman, zelf een kruidendeskundige, geeft in dit centrum les aan de lokale bevolking. Hij leert hen hoe deze planten en kruiden verbouwd moeten worden en welke wijze deze kruiden medicinaal kunnen worden gebruikt. Dat is erg belangrijk want voor het merendeel van de lokale bevolking is een recept van d ehuisarts niet te betalen. Na dit bezoek heeft ze haar fietstocht door West Afrika vervolgd, soms alleen, soms in gezelschap van andere wereldfietsers die ze onderweg tegen kwam. Fietsen over Afrikaanse wegen is vaak fietsen over onverharde wegen en dat bij een temperatuur van 30! En soms meost ze even een flinke omweg maken om gebieden waar het onrustig is te vermijden. Maar hoe de fietstocht ook verder gaat verlopen: het blijft een uitzonderlijke prestatie van deze wereldreizigster voor goede doelen.
En u kunt haar ondersteunen bij het goede doel waarvoor ze nu aan het fietsen is: zonnepanelen voor een medische opleidingsschool en een kleine gezondheidskliniek in het oosten van Congo. Beide hebben dringend behoefte aan elektriciteit. En elektriciteitsvoorzieningen zijn er niet in dit gebied. Cindy vraagt niet om geld maar om uw stem uit te brengen op haar goede doel dat meedoet aan de landelijke actie: ‘Fietsen Scoort’. Als dit project warvoor ze fietst, eindigt bij de 5 projecten met het meeste aantal stemmen, levert dat €3000 op. Zij heeft zelf al €2000 bij elkaar gefietst. Hoe we elkaar ontmoet hebben
Focus on Education is een kleinschalige organisatie van Marijke en Jacques den Ridder. Ik kende ze in 2005 nog niet hoewel Juffrouw Marijke lerares is geweest op de school waarop ik heb gezeten. Zij is nooit mijn juffrouw geweest, wel die van mijn zus, en daarvan herinner ik me haar vaag. Een echte juffrouw in hart en nieren. Een leuke juffrouw, rustig en fijn. Of ze dat ook was geweest voor een kind als ik, weet ik niet. Vast wel. Ik was nogal ruw en wild, maar ook verlegen. En dat is eigenlijk altijd zo gebleven.
Wanneer ik in 2005 in Sri Lanka op reis ben krijg ik via mijn moeder te horen dat Marijke in Galle is, samen met haar echtgenoot Jacques. Zij zijn daar om de slachtoffers van de tsunami te helpen. Ik ben er als een van de weinige reizigers. Hoewel ik niet weet waar Marijke en haar man Jacques precies verblijven reis ik af naar Galle. Ik heb een naam en een adres op een papiertje staan. Waarom ik hen wil zien is me nog steeds een vraag, maar om de één of andere reden wil ik hen ontmoeten. Misschien omdat ze uit hetzelfde dorp als ik komen? Wanneer ik dan ’s avonds laat in Galle aankom laat ik me door een zwak verlichte riksja naar een guest house brengen die in de Lonely Planet staat. Ik kom aan in een pittoresk straatje met lage huisjes geschilderd in dikke lagen pastel. Alle huisjes hebben een smeedijzeren hekje voor hun patio en wanneer ik één zo’n hekje open klik word ik welkom en warm ontvangen. Hoewel het al laat is ben ik zeer benieuwd of de bewoners van dit guest house genaamd Beach Haven weten wie bij de naam hoort die ik op het papiertje gekrabbeld heb staan. En of zij toevallig een Westerse vrouw kennen die hier is met haar man die met hun stichting een aantal arme scholieren steunen via een maandelijkse bijdrage voor boeken, schooluniformen en schoolmateriaal.
Mijn verbazing is groot als deze mevrouw genaamd mevrouw Sita Wijenayake de contactpersoon ter plaatse blijkt te zijn van stichting Focus on Education; zij helpt Marijke. Marijke en haar man zijn helaas net vertrokken vanuit dit zelfde guest house naar hun volgende project. Ik blijk op het goede pad maar ben net te laat. De spoorzoeker in mij was altijd al goed en het spoor zet zich verder wanneer ik terug kom in Nederland. Daar organiseren Marijke en Jacques net een bijeenkomst om geld in te zamelen. Ik verschijn er uitgedost met mijn etnische Pakistaanse armbanden en mijn gedachten golven mee over de bergkammen van de film die vertoond wordt. Zij komen op plaatsen waar ik als gewone reiziger niet kom. Zij doen dingen waarvan ik droom. Marijke verschijnt in de door hen gemaakte film als een volkomen natuurlijke herderin, die samen met Jacques en een groep Gujjars (een nomadische stam) een kudde buffels leiden. Terwijl zij slapen in een tent, buffelmelk als ontbijt drinken en elke dag vele kilometers afleggen en dit doen als een sponsortocht, voel ik maar één wens.
