Interview by Heike

Heike is a woman cycling from Germany in the direction of Japan. We met on internet and although she must be incredible busy as a cyclist, she has start interviewing solo woman cycling the world. Here’s the interview she did with me.

Born: 17th of March 1972, I am 42 years young now

How many countries have you cycled in so far: Starting from the Netherlands, Belgium, France and Spain in Europe, Morocco, Western Sahara, Mauritania, Senegal, The Gambia, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Conakry, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria and Cameroon in Africa, Turkey, Georgia and Armenia in East Europe, Iraq Kurdistan, Iran, The United Arab Emirates and Oman in the Middle East with now being in India makes it a 21 countries.

How many kilometer in total: About 23,000 kilometer, the moment I write this

How many years on the road: I start cycling in May 2012, so that’s 2 years now. This is my first cycling trip.

Quiet Sahara Strech

Years of traveling brought me many different insights, philosophies and countries I needed to be (over 90 in total). I lived in Pakistan, went over 15 times to India and when I stopped cycling the world, that was after 50.000 kilometer through 45 countries, I met Geo. Together we now try to be more self-sustainable, grow our own food and live off-grid. Kinda have. Am camping on an island near my old home. Am negotiating departure from my old job. They don’t want to let me resign but also don’t want to let me work part time yet. The next week will be the crux. From 30 June I will visit friends by motorcycle for a week then on 8 July I leave properly. I cannot wait!

Well, it seem you are good at what you do so they will have to choose and will take the best out of it. It’s either all or nothing for them, and you. So they probably choose a little you than ; )

I am busy on visa procedures. Don’t know where to go to after India? Am almost landlocked, except for Myanmar… so it seems I will head there?!

Next week my ‘husband’ is coming to India. Exciting!! We are going to cycle in the Himalaya. Look so much forward to that : )

Ooh … I can’t wait to read about your travels in Myanmar because I am going there in January. I have a friend who works for the United Nations who is living there until May (I don’t know exactly where) so that’s is why I hope to go there.

So exciting that you have a ‘husband’ coming to ride with you in the Himalaya. I really want to go there. I think it would be amazing.

At the moment I will probably ride from Adelaide to Melbourne here in Australia from July-September (I have entered a 100km trail running event near Melbourne in September). Then I might fly to South Korea to cycle there before Taiwan in December. I really want to go to South Korea and Taiwan so am just going to do it. I can’t say why I want to go there but I am drawn to those countries. From Taiwan I will probably go for a short time to Myanmar then back to Hong Kong (to see friends and welcome the year of the sheep because that is my year) before going to Japan for 2-3 months to see the cherry blossoms. The eastern Asian countries appeal to me very much. From there I want to see my Oma in Holland. That is very important to me and I think the weather in Holland will be starting to improve in late April/early May.

First I have to find out whether I can go over land from India to Myanmar!! I am busy researching that right now. Tomorrow I am off to the different embassies to get info…

Hallo Cin, ik lees hierboven, ben je nog steeds verliefd. Fijn dat er iemand is waar je speciale gevoelens voor hebt, iemand waar je je verbonden mee voelt.

Hoi Monique,

Verliefd, ja… dat zal ik wel zijn als ik hem weer zie want de afstand en de ondiepheid doen wel wat af voor zulke eerste gevoelens. Hij komt over 6 dagen en daar kijk ik erg naar uit. We gaan samen in de Himalaya fietsen. Heb er erg veel zin in, eindelijk wat koelte hoop ik. Ik druip hier van de hitte, maar gelukkig heft het wat dagen, en nu nog, geregend.

Interview is goed ja, vind ik ook. Ik ben altijd dol op geode interviews en niet van die flansige Iraanse ; ) Fijn dat je ervan genoten hebt.

Ben nu het boek ‘Congo’ aan het lezen, moet vaak aan je denken. Jullie hebben daar ook vertoefd hé.

Hallo Cinderella,
Ja het boek , Congo, heb ik hier ook liggen, moet ik nog lezen, Dirk heeft het gelezen en vond het zeer goed.
Dirk is in Kinsjasha, Congo, geboren, zijn ouders hebben er gewoond, maar zijn in ’60 teruggekeerd. Ik ben er een paar jaren geleden op visite geweest bij een vriendin, enkel voor 14 dagen, maar ik ken wel enkele Congolezen hier in Belgie.
Liefs en geniet van alle mooie dingen die jou pad kruisen, ik wou dat ik erbij was, als vliegje dan 😉

Ah… het is een geweldig boek Monique, eens je erin begint kan je niet meer stoppen. Het is echt goed! Dus jouw man en zijn papa en mama zijn in de woelige jaren ’60 vertrokken. Ja, te begrijpen! Ik dacht dat jij er ook gewoond had?

Waren de ouders van Dirk ondernemers daar? Vast wel, denk ik… maar ik snap wel dat Dirk graag in die landen vertoefd hoewel het…. nou ja, lees dat boek maar eens gauw!!

Als vliegje, zeg je…. wat schattig. Maar Monique, je zou zo van mijn fiets of schouder afwaaien want ik maak veel vaart tegenwoordig hoor! Dan wel een vliegje met ankertjes aan zijn voetjes zodat je niet weg kan waaien : )

Dan zal ik er eens aan beginnen, aan het boek, bedankt voor de tip!
En geniet van het samenzijn, dan komen jullie het tentje niet meer uit.;)

Nee Monique, ik ben er niet geweest. Ten eerste was het gebied waarheen ik wilde te gevaarlijk (veel rebellen) en redelijk moeilijk begaanbaar in het regenseizoen (vader van Dirk heft daar geen weg aangelegd) en… mijn fiets ging finaal kapot in Cameroon! Weet je nog…

Over 3 dagen komt Henrik, en als we kunnen kamperen zal het inderdaad leuk worden ; )

Haha, grappig je opmerking, klopt, die weg die jij moest berijden was nog niet aangelegd, dat stuk zijn ze vergeten.
Ik wist wel dat je niet door DRCongo bent gefietst. Ik wist dit en toch vraag ik het, dom van me.
Nu ben je waarschijnlijk volop aan het genieten van je bezoek.

Misschien ben je net als ik bevangen Door de hitte en zeg en doe je dingen onbewust en war suffig. Ben je al begonnen in het boek? Nee? Kom op… sla het open. Bekijk de man op de omslag. Wat doet die foto met je?

Het kolonialisme (klopt dat woord) heeft veel gedaan. Maar ik vraag me af of het anti koloniaal tijdperk zo goed was. Weet je… er is alles voor te zeggen. Beide kanten. Kolonisator zoden gewoon niet moeten bestaan! Wou dat ik het boek gelezen had voor Afrika.

Toch kloppen mijn bedenkingen heel goed.

Jammer… Ja wat? Alles. Het begin van diefstal in Afrika.

Begin er maar aan Monique. Ik ben in 2 weken alnl over de helft.

Hoi Cinderella,
Dit is een bijzonder goed interview waarin heel goed wordt weergegeven hoe je in het leven staat en hoe je ernaar leeft. Sterk ( lichamelijk en geestelijk), stoer, vetrouwend op je intuïtie, vol zelfvertrouwen. Ben bijzonder onder de indruk. Liefs, Marijke.
